Jammu: Leave-aside staff crunch in J&K government-run universities and schools, all Central Educational Institutions, including IIT and IIM are too marred by a faculty shortage in the Union Territory with over 800 posts in teaching and non-teaching categories lying vacant in these institutes.
If one goes by the official statistics, the filling up of vacancies in the institutes of higher learning seems no longer top-of-mind for policy makers. The State Public Universities in the Union Territory also have more than 400 posts of teachers and 151 non-teaching positions lying vacant.
Statistics shared by the Union Ministry of Education reveals that Kendriya Vidyalayas functioning in Jammu and Kashmir were worst-hit by the shortage of teachers where as many as 332 teaching posts were vacant till last year. “Navodaya Vidyalayas had also been battling the staff crunch where 110 teaching positions were lying vacant”, it revealed.
Quality education was also affected in the two premier institutes of higher learning—Central University of Jammu (CUJ) and Central University of Kashmir (CUK) where at-least 176 teaching posts, including Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors have been lying vacant.
“In CUJ, there are 60 teaching and 38 non-teaching posts lying vacant, notwithstanding the fact that the Government of India provided an amount of over Rs 150 crore for academic and Rs 75.29 crore for infrastructure purpose to the university during the last five years,” the official document suggested.
The Central University of Kashmir is also badly hit by the shortage of teachers as a total of 116 posts of professors, associate professors and assistant professors are lying vacant in the institution. Besides, 29 posts in the non-teaching category are also vacant. “The University has been provided an amount of Rs 141 crore for academic purposes and Rs 26 crore for infrastructure purposes in the last five years (from 2017-18 to 2021-2022),” the document revealed.
In the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jammu, there are 29 teaching posts and 38 non-teaching posts are still vacant, while 18 teaching and 21 non-teaching posts are lying vacant in Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) Jammu.
The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar, another premier educational institute in the Northern region of the country, has been battling staff shortages as 45 posts of teachers and 13 posts in non-teaching category are lying vacant in the institute.
The government claimed that the recruitment of teachers was a continuous process and the vacancies kept arising due to a number of factors including retirement of teachers and additional requirements on account of enhanced students’ strength.
“The Ministry of Education requests Educational Institutions, State Governments and Union Territory governments to fill up vacancies on a mission mode from time to time as a majority of Educational Institutions come under the functional domain of respective State/Union Territory governments,” it said.
