Civilian dies, soldier injured in encounter as militants flee

Srinagar: A civilian was killed and a soldier got injured during an anti-militancy operation in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district on Friday, officials said.
The operation at Redwani has been called off as militants managed to give slip to the forces after the initial exchange of fire.
A gun battle erupted between the militants and security forces at Redwani during a cordon and a search operation in the area.
"As the joint team of forces cordoned the suspected spot, the hiding terrorists opened fire, triggering a gunfight," an official said. “A soldier and a civilian got injured.”
Police said the civilian identified as Manzoor Lone of Redwani Bala Kulgam succumbed to his injuries.
“Injured Army Jawan Kiran Singh of 1RR, is hospitalized at ( Army’s) 92 base Hospital Srinagar,” a police spokesman said.
Police said a massive search operation was carried out to trace the militants. However, no fresh contact was established with the militants.
“ The search operation concluded,” the spokesman said.
This was the third operation in Kulgam during the past fortnight where militants managed to break the cordon.
The gun battle broke out on a day when security was beefed up across Kashmir on the third anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution.
