Jammu: The rain gods have been kind this ongoing monsoon season in Jammu and Kashmir, especially in the month of July as it has received 571 mm rainfall in Jammu which is about 250 mm more than the normal. Moreover the meteorological department has also predicted good rainfall in the month of August as well.
Monsoon arrived in the plains of J&K’s Jammu division on June 30, with the meteorological department predicting normal rainfall across UT this season, which is likely to stay here till mid September.
The monsoon accounts for around 70 per cent of the country's annual rainfall and irrigates 60 per cent of its net sown area. Nearly half of India's population depends on agriculture directly or indirectly.
However, in July, the rainfall occurring on a daily basis has also led to worries among farmers, as it has resulted in water logging in their farms. As per agriculture experts, the non-stop rain is not helpful to crops and a gap for one or two days between spells is ideal. The rain in intervals gives the water more time to dry and helps in crop growth.
Jammu is receiving rainfall on a daily basis in July, especially in the morning hours it has become a sort of routine. The morning rain however comes with its woes, as water logging leads to traffic snarls causing hardships to office goers. The frequent rain has also pushed up the prices of fruits and vegetables. This season the region has also seen frequent flash floods triggered by heavy downpour.
Last week rain in Jammu city has wreaked havoc, as water entered many houses and business establishments in the low lying areas.
It also rained on Monday morning. Due to the rains in the upper areas, there is a danger of flooding in the river Chenab, Ujj, Tawi and other river tributaries.
In the last 24 hours, Bhaderwah recorded 7.5 mm of rain. Batote 2.2 and Katra 3.4 mm. In Kashmir division, Srinagar recorded 9.2 mm, Qazigund 12.8 mm, Pahalgam 31.4 mm, Kupwara 13.2 mm, Kukranag 8.8 mm, Gulmarg 6.0 mm. Jammu 6.8, Banihal 21.9, Batote 2.2, Bhaderwah 7.5 mm of rain was recorded.
“There is possibility of scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rain/thundershower over Jammu & Kashmir Divisions in next 24 hours,” the meteorological department said, adding, “There is possibility of isolated to scattered light rain and thunder for subsequent two days.”
