JAMMU: Tackling the radicalisation among youth in Valley and some parts of Jammu region, firming up strategies to maintain security in the new union territory, and countering Pakistan-sponsored terror will remain the focus of discussion at the annual Director Generals of Police--DGPs conference 2019 which will commence from Friday in Pune.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the national conference, where a range of security issues will be discussed by the top police officers from the States and Central Police Organisations from December 6 to December 8.
This conference is the first after abrogation of Article 370 and re-organisation of erstwhile J&K State into two Union Territories and will focus on prevailing issues in the strife-torn region, besides other issues such as Ayodhya verdict aftermath and the amendment in the SPG Act.
While Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate the event, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will attend the top police meet for the first time.
The three-day meet will see top officials from the police forces of states, central investigative and intelligence agencies and Central Armed Police Forces coming together and discussing internal security-related issues.
“Director General of Police Dilbag Singh has already left for Pune,” sources in the administration informed The News Now, adding that the meeting will primarily focus on Jammu and Kashmir.
“Weaning away radicalized youth from terror fold in J&K is a challenge and brainstorming on tackling the issue is likely to be undertaken during the event,” official sources said.
They said that a spurt in terror activities in Chenab Valley region in past one year, seen as a bid to revive militancy in the peaceful region, will also be deliberated upon in the meeting.
“Apart from issues like technological upgradation of police forces and tackling cyber crimes, the meeting is also likely to firm up strategies to maintain security in J&K and counter Pakistan-sponsored terror and new tactics like arms dropping by Pakistani agencies in Indian territory through drones,” they said.
The arms dropping by Pakistan in Punjab has come as a major concern as Islamabad aims to arm the Muslim populace of the Jammu region to foment trouble there amid tight security arrangements in the Kashmir Valley, they said.
The three-day long meeting will take place on the campus of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Pashan area of Pune.
"The Ministry of Home Affairs organizes the conference every year. Earlier it was organized in Delhi, but after Modi became prime minister, it is being held in different cities every year," the senior police official said.
Last year the conference was held at Kevadia in Gujarat, near the Statue of Unity.
