SMC to light up Srinagar with 70,000 streetlights

SRINAGAR: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) is going to light up the Srinagar city with more than 70,000 streetlights in phased manners while as the work on their installation will be completed in six months.
The residents in the city have been complaining about the defunct street lights following which the SMC has now started working on lighting up the street.
An official in Srinagar Municipal Corporation said that around 70,000 street lights will be installed in Srinagar city and is being sponsored under the central project executed by an outside company.
He added that the work has already begun in first phased manner while as streetlights will be installed in coming days by the Corporation in all 36 municipal wards of the city.
The lights will be first installed in the areas which include M.A road, Dalgate, Residency Road, Nishat, Shalimar, Pantha Chowk, Khanyar on main roads, link roads and lanes.
Another official in the Corporation said, “The Energy Efficient Services Limited (EESL) has done the survey of the city and has identified the spots where streetlights will be installed in phased manners”.
He added that team of EESL are also working and are scheduled to complete the work in six months. While as in the first phase manner number of streetlights (LED) will be installed are 37,000 and in the second phase the remaining lights will be installed in the summer capital.
“Of the Rs 500 crore to be made available to the SMC under the 14th Finance Commission, Rs 86 crore has already been given,” the official added.
Adding that he said once the project is completed, it will defiantly light up the Srinagar city.
“It will defiantly help the masses including shopkeeper the most. After that, they can keep their shops open till late night,” he said.
On being asked about street lights which are already defunct, an official said, “The Srinagar Municipal Corporation will also work on that will make sure those lights glow again”.
