SRINAGAR: Security forces killed a militant during an encounter which raged in a village in Bandipora district of north Kashmir on Sunday.
The gunfight between security forces and militants was still under way in Lawdara village, about 55 km from Srinagar, till late Sunday night, even as the security forces believe to have trapped more associates of the slain ultra.
The encounter started when a joint team of Army, Special Operations Group and Central Reserve Police Force launched a cordon-and-search-operation in Vijhara Lewdara area of the district, following specific information about the presence of some militants, the officials said.
“As the forces approached the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon them triggering retaliation leading to an encounter,” officials said.
“In the ensuing gunfight, a militant was killed but his identity and group affiliation was yet to be ascertained,” they said.
A few weeks ago, three ultras were neutralised by security forces in an encounter in Awantipora, including of Al Qaeda linked Ansar Ghazwat-ul Hind and Zakir Musa's successor, Abdul Hameed Lelhari.
