20 killed in 5 major accidents in past four days

SRINAGAR: The dance of death continued on the roads for fourth straight day in Jammu and Kashmir, when five members of a family were killed after their car collided head on with a truck in Kulgam district on Wednesday.
This is the fifth major road accident in the newly formed union territory in past 4 days, and a total of 20 persons have lost their lives in these mishaps so far.
Wednesday’s accident took place at Khudwani bypass in the south Kashmir district.
“A Hyundai Grand i10 carrying 7 members of a family met with an accident in Kulgam in the wee hours of Wednesday,” a police official said
The car had a head-on collision with a truck coming from opposite direction, near Khudwani bypass.
The locals immediately rushed to the car and managed to take out the passengers from the scrambled car, he said.
However, five among them had died on the spot and two of the passengers were shifted to a nearby hospital.
He said the family of seven, hailing from Kargil, was on its way to Jammu.
The official indentified the deceased as Mohammad Abdullah, his daughters Mehsoora and Amina, Mohammad Hussain and Kaneeza.
“Two other members of the family -- Ghulam Hassan and Nargis -- were seriously injured in the collision and they are undergoing treatment at a hospital,” he said.
The police have taken the cognizance of the incident and has filed a case against the truck driver under relevant sections of the law.
This is the fifth major accident in the newly formed union territory of Jammu and Kashmir since Sunday, in which 20 persons have lost their lives so far.
On Tuesday, five persons were killed when a Maruti Swift car bearing registration number JK02BW7089 rolled down into a 400-feet gorge near Devsole in Panthiyal area of Ramban district around 7 pm, resulting into on spot death of all of them.
The deceased included Sushil Kumar (32) of Khanna Chadgal in Jammu, Avtar Singh (38) of Sarore in Samba, Vikram Singh (29) and Sikander Singh (33), both from Hiranagar in Kathua, and Mohammad Ramzan Reshi, a resident of Boothu in Bandipora.
On Monday, four J&K Bank employees were killed when the bank’s cash van they were traveling in skidded off the road and plunged into deep gorge at Kardooh Morh on Bani road in Kathua district.
The cash van carrying around Rs 1.60 crore cash was on its way to J&K Branch Unit Bani from J&K Bank Treasury Kathua when the driver failed to negotiate a sharp curve and the vehicle plunged into deep gorge at Kardooh Morh in Tehsil Bani.
In a similar accident on Sunday, three persons of a family were killed and seven more injured when a truck carrying a nomadic family had skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Udhampur.
The accident had taken place around 2 am on Sunday when the driver of the truck lost control over the vehicle while moving from Srinagar to Jammu with a Bakerwal family and it rolled down into deep gorge at Samroli.
Hour before that accident, three persons including a woman were killed in Baramulla when a Tavera vehicle hit a scooter coming from opposite side head on, near Pattan town in the North Kashmir district.
