JAMMU: More than 12,000 street lights in different areas of Jammu, i.e in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), have either been lying damaged or non-functional since long but the Corporation has neither replaced nor repaired these lights.
As per the figures available exclusively with The News Now, there around twenty two thousand (22,000) street lights which have been installed in all the seventy five (75) wards falling within the limits of JMC.
“Out of these 22,000 street lights installed in different areas of Jammu for the convenience of people, around 12,000 lights are either damaged or they are non-functional since long,” reliable sources informed The News Now.
They said that 300 to 350 street lights have been installed in each of the 75 wards. There is not even a single ward which doesn’t have damaged or non-functional street lights, they said.
Importantly, sources said that not only in the interior areas, a big number of street lights is lying defunct on the highways and the main roads of Jammu thus causing lot of inconvenience to people during late evening and in the evening besides posing risk of accidents and anti-social anti-national activities.
They further informed that the Corporation, which was formed in October last year, has only provided a mere 40 to 50 street lights in the last one year to each ward as against the damaged or non-functional street lights.
The number of street lights provided by the JMC to each ward is far too less to replace the damaged/non-functional ones, they said.
Sources informed that the issue has been vociferously raised by all the Corporators of JMC, both from the ruling BJP and the opposition, in each of the House Committee meeting held so far in the last one year.
The House meetings of the JMC are primarily meant for the Corporators to raise development and other issues of their respective wards concerning people.
However, despite repeated demand and protests by the opposition Corporators, the House meeting of JMC has not been conducted since the last few months thus denying the public representatives of their right to raise issues concerning their wards.
