Degree College Kargil, National Academy of Sciences, Jammu Chapter organize International Year of Periodic Table

KARGIL, SEPTEMBER 17:- The two day events organized in connection with the International Year of Periodic Table of Chemical Elements organized by the Department of Chemistry, Government Degree College Kargil in collaboration with the National Academy of Sciences, Jammu Chapter culminated today at Degree College premises, Kargil.
The aim of the events was to enhance the understanding and appreciation of the Periodic Table. Students from 8 higher secondary schools of the district, students of the college and the teaching faculty of schools and college participated in the event.
Principal Degree College Kargil Dr Amina Quari was the chief guest while as Assistant Professor Botany Dr Amjad Ali was the guest of honor during the concluding ceremony.
Head of Department Chemistry, Muhammad Ishaq while welcoming the guests and participants highlighted the importance of the event. In his speech he said that the Periodic Table is one of the most important and influential discovery in the modern science and its essence applies not only to Chemistry discipline but also for Physics, Biology and all other basic Science disciplines. He further said that the periodic table is the common language of Science.
Dr Amina Quari in her speech stressed the students to actively ensure their participation in such events. She also applauded the organizers for organizing this two day programme.
Assistant Professor Chemistry Sajjad Hussain conducted the proceedings of different events.
During the different events held during the two days, students of the college delivered power points presentations (PPTs) on the Periodic Table.
Fatima Batool of 6th semester while delivering a detailed PPT on periodic table explained in detail the trends of general properties of the elements. Hamida Banoo of 5th semester talked about bioinorganic chemistry and highlighted the importance and role of elements in the biological process. She further explained the role of Magnesium and Iron in living organisms and also highlighted the structure of chlorophyll and hemoglobin. Muhammad Hussain of 6th semester delivered a presentation on Green Chemistry and highlighted the twelve principles of Green Chemistry and the importance of Green Chemistry in the sustainable development of mankind.
During the second session on the first day, a quiz competition was conducted in which three students from each school participated. Assistant Professor Manzoor Hussain and Lecturers of HSS Panikhar and Trespone Ghulam Muhammad and Khadim Hussain acted as judges.
In the poster presentation two students each from Degree College Kargil and Higher Secondary School Shargole, Panikhar, and Pashkum participated. Each student explained their poster themes.
During the last session, Assistant Professor Chemistry Muhammad Ishaq delivered a PPT wherein he explained the origin of elements and the need of classification of elements. He further highlighted the success, history of the Mendeleev’s periodic law and periodic table and its evolution to modern periodic table. He also highlighted the role of women in the discovery of elements.
At the end of the 1st day the students were taken to the Chemistry Lab, where Assistant Professor Chemistry Manzoor Hussain enlightened them about the safety rules in Chemistry. The students were excited to know about the role of various equipments available in the laboratory.
The 2nd day was started with the welcome speech and the participants paid visit to the laboratories of Physics, Zoology, Botany, Geology and Geography departments.
Pertinently, Year 2019 is the 150th birth anniversary of the iconic Periodic Table and is being celebrated world over.
