JAMMU: Under the new motor vehicles act, which has become the talking point of the whole country for its harsh and heavy penalties, Jammu Traffic Police on Monday issued more than 480 challans to violators on the first day of its formal implementation.
While the new rules became effective from September 1 pan India, their implementation in Jammu and Kashmir commenced from September 16 only.
According to the data shared by Joginder Singh, SSP Traffic, Jammu City, nearly 480 challans were issued after the amended MV Act came into effect from Monday.
“The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019 was effective from 1st September across the country, including J&K. However, J&K Traffic Police chose to give a breather of 15 days before enforcing the provisions of new Act,” SSP Traffic Jammu City said.
He added that the department had embarked on an awareness drive in the region during 1-15 September, so that people come to know of the new provisions and penalties.
Pertinently, traffic police slapped only court challans, even for the compoundable offences, and as such, all of the fines will be payable at local courts.
The reports said that the traffic police also suspended driving licences of some of the violators; however, the same was refuted by the SSP.
Post abrogation of Article 370, and its corollary, the special status, the MV (Amendment) Act 2019 was directly applicable to J&K.
IGP Traffic J&K, Alok Kumar had recently made a fervent appeal to the people to strictly adhere to amended traffic rules for their own safety and safety of others as well.
“J&K is prone to accidents. This has been repeatedly proved by facts-figures and devastating stories of accidents. Therefore, the exponentially hiked fines look good when we want to reduce the scale of fatal road accidents here,” said a local.
