Book Review: "Loveswept" by Prasupta Roy

What do readers look for in books of the romance genre? Probably it is the melange of emotions that these stories elicit, the twists and turns in the plot, the nuances of the central love story, the lover’s besottedness for each other and the captivating dialogues which make for a good read. The author Prasupta Roy comes up with the book “Loveswept”, which has all of these elements.

The narrative follows the protagonists Anushka and Kaushik and their emotional love story. Anushka is a librarian in an esteemed institute and dreams of becoming an author, while Kaushik is a lecturer in a college in Siliguri. They meet, fall in love and wish to marry. But they get separated. They keep their love enflamed in their hearts but stay firm to the sacrifices made. After some years, Anushka becomes an acclaimed novelist and Kaushik, the principal of a college. They wish to see each other again and they do. What twist will come in their love story? Will Kaushik and Anushka ever come together? The storyline then goes on to answer these questions.

The title of the book is captivating, and the front cover is simple and elegant. However, a sassier book cover would have made the book more appealing. The blurb on the back cover of the book is well-written and engrossing, and will interest the readers of romantic fiction. The narrative is character-driven and immediately draws the readers into the exquisitely written love story. The characters have been explored in depth, and the protagonists are written in a way that the readers will root for them, once they get to know about their emotional intricacies and fallacies.

There are many twists and turns in the narrative, and though the readers may not agree with some of the decisions that the protagonists take, but will root for the characters nonetheless. This passionate love story also has elements of sacrifice and heartbreak. The writing style of the author is good, and the language used is simple and lucid. However, the story drags at places and there are also some editing glitches.

This book is an enjoyable short read, with all the clichéd elements that a love story offers, but also so much more. The emotional heft, likable characters, the twists and turns will keep the readers hooked. This book should be read by those interested in a short read and fans of romantic fiction.
