JAMMU: After remaining in sort of exile for the first five months of this year, Center’s special representative for sustained dialogue with various shades of opinion in Jammu and Kashmir, Dineshwar Sharma landed in Srinagar Tuesday morning---second time in last 35 days--signaling continuity of Narendra Modi government’s political outreach in the restive state.
Sharma met Governor Satya Pal Malik Raj Bhavan and stressed on the need for taking into account aspirations of youth and students across the State.
According to a government spokesman, “Sharma apprised Governor about his consultations with a cross section of society in the State and emphasised the need for taking into account aspirations of youth and students across the State.”
The Governor and Sharma, the spokesman further said, “also discussed about the ongoing Shri Amarnathji Yatra.”
Surprising the naysayers of Modi regime’s handling of Jammu and Kashmir, the then Home Minister Rajnath Singh had announced appointment of Dineshwar Sharma as interlocutor on October 23, 2017. His mandate was summed up in the following phrase: “to initiate and carry forward a dialogue with the elected representatives, various organisations and concerned individuals in the State of Jammu and Kashmir.”
Widely respected for his low profile yet high impact engagements, Sharma’s fate under Amit Shah as Home Minister was widely speculated which was put to rest on June 11 when he made his first visit to Valley in 2019.
His meeting with Governor Satya Pal Malik today further confirmed the continuation of political engagement initiated by the Modi government in its previous tenure.
