Restrictions imposed in parts of Srinagar
Srinagar, Jul 8: Restrictions were on Monday imposed in downtown and Shehar-e-Khas (SeK) in this summer capital as a precautionary measure in view of strike called by separatists on the third death anniversary of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) Burhan Wani.
A police official said restrictions under Section 144 CrPC have been imposed in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of M R Gunj, Nowhatta, Safa Kadal and Khanyar in the downtown and SeK since Monday morning as a precautionary measure to prevent any law and order problem.
However, all gates to historic Jamia Masjid, stronghold of moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) chairman Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq, have been locked and nobody was being allowed to enter the worship place since early Monday morning. Roads leading to Jamia Masjid have also been closed with barbed wires and vehicles were being directed by security forces to take alternate routes to react to their destinations.
The main Nallahmar road from Tarabal Nawa Kadal to Khanyar crossing has been partially closed for traffic and pedestrian movement. Security forces have closed one side of the road in many areas in downtown though traffic was allowed to ply from the other side.
A large number of security forces have also been deployed at Rainawari, Khanyar, Nowpora and Bobdamb. Additional security forces and state police personnel have also been deployed in the civil lines, including Residency road, Moulana Azad road, historic Lal Chowk, the nerve centre of the city, Budshah Chowk and Jehangir Chowk to prevent any law and order problem.
Wani was killed in an encounter with security forces on this day in Kokernag area in south Kashmir district of Anantnag. However, his killing evoked massive protests that left over 120 civilians’ dead in the valley, where life remained affected for about six months in 2016.
