Controversy in Death Man cremated as per Hindu rituals, wife to get property

JAMMU: Against the backdrop of controversy triggered over performing last last rites of man, who got converted a decade ago, a local Court on Monday allowed the parental family of the deceased to perform his last rites as per Hindu rituals adding that his wife will get the property of her husband.
Police sources said, "The Munsiff Court of Udhampur this afternoon in a judgment, a day after brief tension broke out between two communities over performing last rites of a man, settled the dispute in the presence of members from both the sides."
They said that the decision of the Court came after mutual understanding of members of both the communities.
Sources said that as per the Court agreement, the last rites of the man identified as Subhash Chander alias Mohammad Shakeel, resident of village Kawa, Udhampur, will be performed as per Hindu rituals.
"The property of the deceased and the job will be given to the wife of the deceased as she was the legal heir," they added.
Meanwhile police said that after the Court order, the last rites of the deceased was performed peacefully in his native village without any tension.
A brief tension broke out on Sunday evening in Udhampur district over performing last rites of a man.
Police said that a Hindu man around a decade ago, had converted and married to a non-Hindu woman in Udhampur.
"He was not well and died after an illness," police said adding that he has made a will in the name of his wife and also mentioned about the performing of his last rites as per the wish of his wife.
Some people of a particular community objected to his burial following which a brief tension broke out.
The body was kept in the mortuary and the matter was handed over to the Court.
