JAMMU: Almost a year after the government extended the limits of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), adding four more wards under its jurisdiction, neither the JMC has provided services in the extended areas and newly added wards nor it has increased the manpower to provide services in these areas, especially the sanitation.

Sources informed that barring few, no services like sanitation, lanes, drains, street lights etc are provided in the new areas and the added wards by the JMC.

Mayor, JMC, Chander Mohan Gupta claimed, “Some services in new wards and extended areas are provided by the Corporation,” but sources said that due to shortage of staff and paucity of funds the JMC has not been providing services in the extended areas and new wards.

It may be mentioned here that in June 2018, the JMC had extended its limits and also added 4 new wards in its jurisdiction. The wards were increased from 71 to 75.

“We have moved a proposal to appoint 600 employees to provide services in the extended areas of the JMC as well as the 4 new wards,” Mayor, Chander Mohan Gupta told The News Now.

He said, “The appointments could not be made due to imposition of Model Code of Conduct (MCC),” and added, “Once the Parliamentary elections get over, the appointments will be made and all services will be provided in the extended areas of the JMC as well as the new added wards”.

Sources said that in the present scenario, sanitation is the worst hit. They said to ensure sanitation, JMC needs atleast 30 workers in each ward. “The proposal was also submitted to the concerned higher authorities but nothing has been done so far,” they said.

Highly placed sources informed that the JMC has 1894 civic workers to maintain and improve sanitation in 56 wards only as in the remaining old 15 wards, the services are outsourced. However, there are no services in the newly added 4 wards and also in the extended areas.

The new wards include Gadigarh Chatta areas, Chowadhi-Sunjwan-Bhatindi areas and Akalapur Muthi areas.

Some areas of Jammu district which earlier were under the jurisdiction of Jammu Development Authority (JDA) were included within the municipal limits.

The areas which have been included in JMC limits are Deeli, Bhour, Gadigarh in Digiana Niabat, Rangoora, Dhawara, Majeen in Sidhra Niabat, Chakrattnoo, Chakjhalloo, Kaluchak, Sunjwan, Chowaddi in Bahoo Niabat.

Similarly, in Muthi, Niabat Dharmal, Muthi, Rakna-Nagbani, Akalpur, Sangrampur, Chalkpatyal, Gangwal, Thekrik Khanie, Panyal, Pattoli Brahamana, Machallya, Shahzadpur Bubba Ganiya, Chalkdurgoo, Thathar, Barnale, Gajsalpura, Gudda Berhamma were also added in JMC limits.
