Terror Funding: JKLF chief sent to judicial custody for 1 month; SHRC issues notices

JAMMU: JKLF chief Yasin Malik, arrested in a case related to funding of separatists and terror groups in Jammu and Kashmir, was sent to judicial custody till May 24 by a Delhi court Wednesday even as State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) issued notices to Chief Secretary, Home department and State Police Chief asking them to submit the detailed compliance report regarding detention and shifting of Malik to NIA custody.

Additional Sessions Judge Rakesh Syal of a Delhi Court sent Malik to judicial custody till May 24.

He also sought reply from the defence counsel on a plea of Tihar jail authorities seeking to produce Malik through video conference due to security concerns.

The court had sent Malik to NIA custody. He was brought to the national capital after a court in Kashmir granted his transit remand to the National Investigation Agency.

The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has reserved its judgment on a CBI plea for reopening three-decade-old cases in which Malik was an accused.

The Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief is facing charges of kidnapping and murder for being allegedly involved in abducting Rubaiya Sayeed, daughter of then Union Home Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in 1989, and killing of four Indian Air Force personnel in 1990.

The JKLF was recently banned under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Meanwhile, the State Human Rights Commission on Wednesday issued to notice Chief Secretary J&K, Commissioner Secretary Home department and DGP police asking them to submit the detailed compliance report regarding detention and shifting of Muhammad Yasin Malik to NIA custody.

The notice to government officials was issued by State Human Rights Commission chairperson Rtd justice Bilal Nazki.

The Commission was hearing a petition filed by Ahsan Untoo, chairman international forum for justice Human Rights JK who had pleaded before the SHRC that Malik is a political worker and was detained under Public Safety Act and later handed over to National Investigation Agency, calling it ‘illegal’.

Untoo had also pleaded before SHRC that a team be constituted who will receive a piece of first hand information regarding the well being of Malik, and he is brought before the media.
