BJP strongholds see high turnout

JAMMU: Three districts with high voter concentration in Udhampur Parliamentary Constituency today recorded high voter turnout as compared to the other three districts of the constituency which went to polls today.

The districts which recorded high voting percentage are traditionally strongholds of the BJP.

The Udhampur Lok Saha seat has a total of 6 districts namely, Kathua, Reasi, Udhampur, Ramban, Doda and Kishtwar. The BJP strong holds, Kathua, Reasi and Udhampur, having high voter concentration as compared to other 3 districts, recorded high voter turnout with over 70% votes, while the other 3 districts Ramban, Doda and Kishtwar recorded a little over 58% voter turnout which could ultimately prove to be vital in deciding victory and defeat of a candidate.

As per official figures, Udhampur District recorded highest voter turnout among all the 6 districts of the constituency with 72.2% voters exercising their right to franchise. It was followed by Kathua and Reasi districts which recorded 69.8% voter turnout each.

The 3 districts of Chenab Valley with low voter concentration namely, Ramban, Doda and Kishtwar witnessed low voter turnout. Ramban recorded 56.4%, Doda 60.5% and Kishtwar recorded 60% voting percentage.
In 2014 also, Kathua, Reasi and Udhampur recorded high voter turnout than other 3 districts of Chenab valley. In 2014, Udhampur witnessed 70.81%, Kathua 73.03% and Reasi 69.8% turnout, while Ramban witnessed 64.52%, Doda 70.28% and Kishtwar recorded 67.35% turnout.

In 2014, union minister and sitting MP from Udhampur Parliamentary Constituency Dr Jitendera Singh defeated former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad with a little over 61000 votes mainly due to high voter turnout in Kathua, Udhampur and Reasi districts, the BJP strong holds.

The high voting percentage in these 3 districts having high voter concentration could again prove to be crucial in deciding fate a candidate.

Although, there are 12 candidates in fray but the main contest is between union minister Dr Jitendera Singh and Congress candidate Vikramaditya Singh.
