London, Apr 17 (UNI) Jofra Archer was named out in the preliminary 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019 at home starting on May 30.
Earlier, Barbados-born Archer had qualified for national selection under new England and Wales Cricket Board residency rules.
However, the pacer was included in the 17-member squad for ODI series against Pakistan and Ireland. He will be in contention for a place in the World Cup side depending on his performance in the series.
“In line with ICC regulations, we have to name a preliminary squad of 15 for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup before April 23. However, all 17 players named in the Royal London ODIs against Pakistan can stake a claim to be in the final 15-man squad, finalised at the end of that series," said Ed Smith, the national selector.
'The selection panel has been impressed with Jofra Archer’s performances in domestic and franchise cricket. He is a very talented and exciting cricketer,' Smith added.
England will finalise their final 15-man World Cup squad after the Pakistan series, which comes to an end on May 19.
England batting line-up had no surprises and it had likes of Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy, Alex Hales, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler in the squad.
The pace attack was comprised of Chris Woakes, Mark Wood, Liam Plunkett, David Willey and Tom Curran. The most surprising pick, however, was Joe Denly, who will serve as the back-up for the spin duo of Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid.
England, the No1 side on the ICC ODI Team Rankings, are among the favourites to lift the trophy at home. They begin their campaign against South Africa.
The preliminary World Cup squad is unchanged from the winter one-day series against the West Indies.
