Varanasi, Feb 19: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the government will not hesitate to punish the corrupt and reward the honest citizens of the country.

Mr Modi was laying the foundation stone for the Sant Ravidas birthplace development project here.

"We brought quota for the poor, so that those marginalised can lead a dignified life. This government is punishing the corrupt and rewarding the honest,” the PM said.

“Till there’s caste-based discrimination, humans won’t be able to connect with each other. There won’t be any equality in society. Had we followed the path shown by Sant Ravidas, our society wouldn’t have been so corrupt. But, unfortunately, this couldn’t happen,” Mr Modi said while addressing the gathering of the followers and disciples of Sant Ravidas on his birth anniversary here.

His government, the PM said, was working towards uplifting the poor and marginalised as wished by the Saint. “Our government is working overtime on several projects which will help the marginalised,” he said focussing on his development pitch in Varanasi.

Mr Modi said by serving the birthplace of Sant Ravidas, he feels honoured to get an opportunity to do something for the disciples of the saint.

"For the past over four-and-a-half years, our government is working only on the ideology of saabka sath sabka vikas," he said while adding that no one can point out that we have made an discrimination in launching the projects.

The PM announced that Rs 50 crore have been given for the expansion and beautification of the Sant Ravidas birthplace which will include a park which will have a bronze idol of the seer, besides a community hall and public utility facilities.

"I came here in 2016 on the same day, got the blessings of the sant and had langar. But it took some time to start the beautification project as we were waiting for the audit report of the UP government," the PM said.

UP Governor Ram Naik and Chief minister Yogi Adityanath were also present in the function.

Yogi Adityanath, in his brief address, said all credit should be given to the PM for his tireless effort to bring Varanasi in the international map and making it a cultural and tourist hub of the world.
