Workshop on sanitation, menstrual hygiene held at Jammu

JAMMU, FEBUARY 09: To improve cleanliness, hygiene and the general quality of life in rural areas, Directorate of Rural Sanitation, J&K today organized workshop on Solid Liquid Resource Management (SLRM) and Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM).
The workshop was inaugurated Secretary Rural Development & Panchayati Raj Sheetal Nanda.
The aim of workshop was to empower women in the state through appropriate Hygiene & Sanitation practices.
Deputy Commissioner Jammu Ramesh Kumar, Deputy Commissioner Rajouri Mohammad Aijaz Asad, Deputy Commissioner Udhampur Ravinder Kumar, Deputy Commissioner Reasi Dr. Sagar Dattatray Doifode, Director Rural Sanitation Indu Kanwal Chib, District Panchayat Officers of Jammu Division along with respective Executive Engineers, REW of concerned departments and Zila Swachh Bharat Preraks were present in the workshop.
Speaking on the occasion, Secretary RDD & PR said that the solid liquid recourse management is an important component and needs special focus. “Every department and functionaries associated with SLRM shall put in a committed effort to achieve the desired results on ground”, she added. She also stressed upon to involve sarpanches and panches to make the mission a success.
Sustainable Solid Liquid Recourse Management, Dumping Garbage and use of double coloured Dustbin, Job opportunities from SLRM for local people, managing polluted water bodies, Myths and Taboos related to Menstruation, Menstruation preparedness mechanism and disposal of menstrual waste were among the key topics discussed during the workshop by respective experts.
C Srinivasan, member Green India Tribunal, an expert on Solid Liquid Resource Management shared his model for sustainable SLRM programme where job opportunities will be created for local population while managing water pollution and introducing a concept of garbage and dustbin free state.
On this occasion, Deane De Menezes, Founder, “Red is the new Green” an expert on Menstrual Hygiene Management discussed about myths and taboos related to menstruation and also shared mechanism for menstrual preparedness in schools, and defining objectives of Menstrual Hygiene Management programme in rural areas of the state.
