JAMMU: In a big relief for the ever-growing number of patients visiting the twin premiere health institutions of Jammu region --Government Medical College & Hospital Bakshi Nagar and Government Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh Hospital Shalamar, the Centre has approved two key health projects under the prestigious Prime Minister’s Development Package (PMDP).

The first project worth Rs. 49 Crore comprises expansion of existing Emergency Ward at the GMC&H Jammu, which remains thronged by large number of patients and their attendants all the time.

Under the second project that has got approval of the Centre last month, the present Labor Room at the Government SMGS Hospital would be extended while the Maternity Wards would also get further expansion, where new wards will come up within the hospital complex.

According to official sources, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) in this regard was submitted to the State Government by the Department of Health & Medical Education last year for further action and keeping in view the importance of the proposals, the Centre Government selected these two particular projects and approved the same for funding.

“Due to heavy rush of visiting patients, it has become very difficult to accommodate and treat them in the present Emergency Ward at the GMC&H and keeping this in mind, we prepared a proposal and submitted it to the State Government for its extension,” they said.

About the exact location, which would be used for extension of the Emergency Ward, the sources said, “The public park located on the left side of the present Emergency has been identified for the purpose. The space in adjacent to the Emergency where a small road presently exists would be added to it and the said road would be given space at the last end for movement of vehicles and the visitors.”

“The new complex would comprise of about 100 beds in three separate floors and each of them shall have at least 34 beds, besides, there shall be CMO Room, Doctors Room, Nurses Room etc in all the three levels,” they said adding further, “Work on this project would be executed by Jammu & Kashmir Police Housing Corporation (JKPHC) and it is likely to start in the month of February this year as Engineers of the Corporation have visited the site.”

“Besides, to solve the problem of space crunch at SMGSH’s Labour Room, a new Maternity Block would be constructed close to it, whereby not only bed strength will be increased but other required facilities would also be made available to the pregnant women,” the official sources further disclosed and added, “The Public Works Department (PWD) has been assigned the job for this project.”

“Funds shall be provided to the twin executing agencies by the State as soon as the same are released by the Government of India,” they added in reply to a query.
