Perth, Dec 18 (UNI) Nathan Lyon has revealed a dressing room tradition wherein every player chosen by the team as their player of the match is given a chance to wear a gold blazer with Phillip Hughes’ Test cap No.408 emblazoned under the Australian crest.
Lyon, who returned 8/116 in the second Test against India in Perth to help Australia to a series-levelling victory, was a longtime teammate of Hughes at New South Wales before Hughes tragically passed away after being hit by a bouncer during a Sheffield Shield game in 2014.
The blazer has the names of players and the details of their performances on it. Lyon, thanks to his feats in Adelaide despite Australia's loss there, had the honour of wearing the jacket coming into the Perth game, an ICC report said.
"It is the man-of-the-match jacket made in honour of Phillip Hughes," Lyon revealed.
"The players vote after each match and whoever owns the jacket at the time, which is the last man-of-the-match winner, has the opportunity to pass it on in the next match, he said.
"I have jacket after Adelaide, so I have the decision to who to pass it on to," Lyon said.
"It is a very special jacket for a number of reasons. Whoever wears this tonight will wear it down to the bar and have a couple of drinks in it and look pretty special walking around in it," he said.
Adam Gilchrist, who was part of many a tradition in the Australian dressing room during his 96-Test career, was also touched.
"It is a wonderful piece of acknowledgment for a lost friend of Australian cricket and it is obviously particularly close to this current bunch of Australian cricketers, who played alongside Phil Hughes," Gilchrist said.
