New Delhi, Dec 10 (UNI) BJP chief Amit Shah on Monday lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi government for not pursuing a policy of vote bank politics and said it has taken several tough decisions which would be "good" for the people.

"Firmness ke saath governance ka ek naya model Modiji ne rakha hae (PM Modi has offered a new model of governance with firmness, but without diluting democracy)," Mr Shah said addressing a function organised for release of a book 'Narendra Modi: Creative Disruptor - The Maker of New India'.

Seeking to direct his tirade against the likes of Pt Jawaharlal Nehru and other Congress leaders, he said it is ridiculous that the so called 'We want peace' message was passed on just to "improve one's own personal image".

"We also favour peace. We have not diluted that, but the peaceful relation does not mean the soldiers in the border will not be given free hands," Mr Shah said.

Apparently in reference to Pakistan, the BJP chief said: "aap shanti nahi rakhte ho, aur hamse shanti chahtey ho (You do not maintain and uphold peace, but you accept us to ensure peace)".

"This government has shown firmness in taking decisions. It has not taken decisions which people will like. It has taken decisions which will be good for the country. Unlike past, the Modi government did not work to create vote bank," Mr Shah said.

BJP chief said often five-six major decisions are taken by some governments in 30 years time span, but "this government has taken perhaps 30 major decisions only in five years".

"I can count on these --- and they include decisions like GST, noteban and surgical strikes," he said.

BJP president said the Modi government is perhaps the first dispensation in the country which has ended the debate whether a government should work for urban India or focus on villages, whether a government should work for farmers or cater to the needs of industries or a one which will work for reforms or focus chiefly on welfare schemes.

"This is a government which has worked for all sections of people," he said.

Sharing his experience of the functioning of Narendra Modi - both as Prime Minister and earlier as the Chief Minister - Mr Shah said Mr Modi had successfully discarded the caste politics in Gujarat because Modi's personal caste base has only 0.10 per cent of the electorate in the state.

Mr Shah said the Modi government has brought in huge change in both foreign policy and defence policy of the country.
