Sarpanchs’ road shows turn ugly, 9 injured, NH blocked

JAMMU: While the Panchayat elections are being conducted peacefully, there seems no end to after result clashes among the contestants and their supporters, as several people received injuries in two separate such clashes, which erupted after winning candidates took out victory marches in Nagrota and Samba on Sunday, even as the agitating protestors blocked national highway at Nagrota for one hour.

For the second consecutive day, a law and order situation occurred at Nagrota when clashes took place between a winner Sarpanch and a runner up.

The verbal brat between the duo took the shape of assault which was followed by stone pelting.

Reports said that the incident took place at 5.30 evening when winning Sarpanch of Panchayat Jagti namely Abha Jamwal with his associates was enjoying her victory in the shape of road show at Dhammi area in Jagti.

While the road show was in progress, her runner up (contestant) Bina Devi raised objections which turned into verbal spat between two and later took ugly turn as supporters of both sides started pelting stones on each other.

In the incident, one Tanveer Singh alias Munna son of Jagdish Singh of Dhammi received injuries on his head.

Following the incident, massive protests were taken out even as the agitated mob blocked the National Highway at Nagrota for one hour.

The matter was finally resolved after the intervention of Nagrota Police which assured legal action against the stone palters.

The second incident took place at Rajpura in district Samba where stone pelting took place during a road show organised by a winning Sarpanch.

Here also, reports said, the road show for victory organized by winning Sarpanch of Maadoon Panchayat in block Rajpura was in progress when it was attacked by some miscreants with stones.

In the incident, around eight persons received injuries and were hospitalized at Ghagwal Hospital.
Police have also registered a case in this connection.

“A case in this connection has been registered. The situation is normal,” said Additional SP Samba Faisal Qureshi.
