Intense cold wave grips Kashmir, Gulmarg shivers at minus 4 6 degree

Srinagar, Dec 6: There was no relief from chilly weather conditions as the mercury remained below freezing point across Kashmir valley, where day chill intensified due to overcast conditions, coupled with ice cold winds.

Meanwhile, people continued to shiver in Ladakh region, where border town of Leh was the coldest place in the region at minus 8.7 degree.

A Met department spokesperson told UNI that very light rain or show would occur during the next 24 hours at isolated places in the valley under the influence of a Western Disturbance (WD).

He said another fresh WD, which originated from the Arabian Sea and is approaching the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan, will hit the state on Saturday. “The WD will result in rain and snow in the valley,” he added.

With temperature nose diving below freezing point, doctors have advised people to keep warm and take extra precautions to prevent heart attacks and strokes.

Even though there was an improvement of about 3 degree from Wednesday in the night temperature, the border town of Leh was the coldest place in the region at minus 8.7 degree.

The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, was the coldest place in the valley. Against minus 4 degree recorded on Wednesday, the mercury dipped and settled at minus 4.6 degree.

However, despite sub-zero night temperature, tourists are having a time of their lives in Gulmarg though the footfall of visitors, including national and international, will increase many folds after the ski slopes are covered with several feet of snow. The ski resort is a major attraction during winters for adventure sports lovers from across the world.

There was marginal improvement in the night temperature in the summer capital, Srinagar, though it was still over a degree below normal. Against minus 3 degree recorded on Wednesday, the night temperature in Srinagar was minus 2.6 degree. The people in the summer capital woke up to yet another cold morning on Thursday and as the day progressed the chill intensified due to overcast conditions, coupled with ice cold winds.

The mercury at world famous tourist resort of Pahalgam improved about a degree from Wednesday and settled at minus 4 degree, which is still slightly below normal.

The mercury at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kukernag settled at minus 2 degree, minus 1.7 degree and minus 2.2 degree, respectively.
