Two jawans injured; another youth abducted, released

SRINAGAR: A CRPF head constable attained martyrdom and two Army soldiers were injured in a JeMterror attack on a CRPF camp, newly established in connection with the ongoing Panchayat elections in Pulwama district on Sunday.

The attack came hours after two militants belonging to the Al-Badar outfit were killed in an encounter with security forces in Shopian district.

The restive district also witnessed abduction of yet another youth by militants in the morning, who was later released late in the day.

A CRPF head constable was killed and two Army jawans injured when Jaish-e-Mohammed militants attacked a newly-set up camp in Pulwama district of South Kashmir Sunday evening, police said.

The incident took place at around 7.30 pm when militants hurled grenades through Underbarrel Grenade Launchers (UBGL) and fired at the CRPF personnel near Kakapora railway station in Pulwama, they said.

The attack resulted in the death of Head Constable Chandrika Prasad, they said.

The camp had been set up recently with a view to enhance security in this militancy-infested district due to the ongoing Panchayat elections.The deceased was there for the election duty as the area will go to polling in 4th phase.

Immediately, the CRPF personnel chased the militants who ran into a nearby locality. The paramilitary forces were assisted by Army jawans of the Rashtriya Rifles, who were patrolling in a nearby area.

The troops reached an orchard where they were fired upon, resulting in injury to two Army jawans. The cordon had to be called off as a religious congregation was there.
The Army jawans were taken to Srinagar-based 92-base hospital and they were out of danger, they said.
Earlier in the morning, two militants of Al-Badr outfit were killed by security forces in an encounter which ensued during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) on Sunday in south Kashmir district of Shopian, a police spokesman said.

On a credible information about the presence of militants in village Reeban, Zainpora in south Kashmir district of Shopian early this morning Rashitriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint search operation, he told.

However, when the area was being sealed, militants hiding there opened fire with automatic weapons, he said adding security forces also retaliated ensuing in an encounter. He said two militants were killed in the encounter and their bodies were recovered.

He said the slain militants of Al-Badr were identified as Nawaz Ahmad Wagay son of Ghulam Qadir resident of RebbanZainapora and YawarWani son of Ali Mohammad Wani resident of Batnoor Litter Pulwam.

Both the killed militants were involved in a series of attacks on security establishments and many other civilian atrocities in the area.

Arms & ammunition including incriminating materials were recovered from the site of encounter.
No collateral damage took place during the encounter, he said.

Meanwhile, another youth was abducted by unidentified gunmen in south Kashmir district of Shopian, taking the total number of people who are in captivity to three.

Official sources said that a group of unidentified gunmen abducted a youth in Shopian on Sunday.
The youth, Suhail Ahmad Ganai, was taken from Meemander village.

He, however, was released on Sunday evening.

Sunday's incident comes after another five youths were abducted from Shopian on Saturday.
Huzaif Ahmad was killed while two others were released unharmed.

two other persons identified as Hakib Javid, a resident of Meemander and Ishfaq Ahmad, resident of Pudsoowho were abducted from Meemender Shopian on Saturday evening are still missing.
