High Voltage Drama ahead of elections to Vijaypur MC posts

Recovered, put up under police security cover

JAMMU: A high voltage drama took place at Vijaypur where an elected Corporator was taken away from police custody by a group of activists led by their leader, allegedly belonging to National Conference which has not contested the recent Municipal elections.

The incident took place only a day before the Municipal Committee Vijaypur would elect its chairman and deputy chairman.

Reports said that Corporator Deepak Kumar who had won as an independent candidate from ward number 6 was missing for last two days following which a formal complaint was reportedly lodged to Vijaypur police by his family members.

The police, however, recovered him from a Jammu hotel.

While police was taking him to police station in its official jeep, the same was intercepted by alleged workers of National Conference, who manhandled the police team, roughing up the cops and taking away the Corporator with them.

Their leader--a former MLA, was also present with the political parties, as seen in the video of the incident which has gone viral across social media platforms.

The incident shook the entire police and civil administration in the district even as Senior Superintendent of Police Samba and other officers from district administration rushed to the residence of the said leader of NC, which interestingly had stayed away from the Urban Local Bodies polls, the result of which was declared last month.

“Kumar has been put up at a Jammu hotel under proper security cover,” said ADC Samba Arun Manhas when contacted.

He added that the Corporator did not lodge complaint against any person and he would vote in the elections to the chairman and deputy chairman of Municipal Committee Vijaypur tomorrow morning.
Pertinently in Vijaypur, BJP and Congress had both bagged three seats each in the 13-member strong body, while rest seven winners had contested as independent candidates.

Sources informed The News Now that while NC had not contested the local elections, the seven independent winners were indeed NC’s proxy candidates.

Among thirteen, seven votes are necessary for electing Chairman and Deputy Chairman in Urban Body Vijaypur.

“With majority achieved, these seven independent candidates, with the support of NC, were all set to form the local government in the town. However, Kumar was wooed by another party to switch sides so as to disrupt the motive of NC to form the local government through proxy candidates,” the sources told The News Now.

Kumar had indeed filed nomination for the election, even as the independents had nominated Ganesh Sharma, winner from Ward number 8, as their candidate for the top post, they said.

When the NC, which is supporting these independent candidates, came to know of this, they took away Kumar from the police custody, they added.
