Night temp improves; day chill intensifies ahead of snow and rain prediction in Kashmir

Srinagar, Nov 11: The night temperature witnessed improvement as the mercury surged and settled several degrees above normal in majority of the places in Kashmir valley, where rain and snow is predicted for four days from Sunday under the influence of a Western Disturbance (WD), which is active in the region.

However, the day chill intensified across Kashmir valley due to overcast conditions coupled with ice cold winds.

World famous ski resort of Gulmarg was the coldest place in the region at minus 3.5 degree, followed by Leh, where mercury dipped and settled at minus 1.3 degree.

A Met department spokesperson told TNN that light rain and snow could occur at few places in Kashmir valley during the next 24 hours under the influence of a fresh WD, which hit the region on Friday. “Moderate to heavy rain and snow would occur for three days from Monday,” he added.

The border town of Kargil in Ladakh region witnessed an improvement of about 13 degree from Saturday in the night temperature, which settled at 6.6 degree due to overcast conditions. But, the mercury at the adjoining Leh dipped and settled at minus 1.3 degree, against minus 0.8 degree recorded on Saturday.

He said skies would be general cloudy and light snowfall could occur during the next 24 hours in Leh, where the maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 9 degree and minus 2 degree, respectively.

After witnessing an improvement of over a degree in the night temperature, people woke up to a chilly Sunday morning following cloudy skies coupled with ice cold winds in the summer capital, Srinagar. Against 1.9 degree recorded on Saturday, the night temperature in Srinagar was 3.2 degree, which is over a degree above normal.

People could be seen buying warm cloths, including jackets, sweaters, mufflers and other warm clothes in the famous Sunday market. The 3-km-long weekly market from Radio Kashmir (RK), Srinagar, crossing to Hari Singh High Streets (HSHS), including historic Lal Chowk, the nerve centre of the city, attracts thousands of buyers from different parts of the valley.

The spokesperson said skies would be general cloudy and light snowfall could occur during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where the maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 12 degree and 3 degree, respectively.

Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, was the only place in the valley where the night temperature dipped. Against minus 3 degree recorded on Saturday, the night temperature in the ski resort settled at minus 3.5 degree, which is about 3 degree below normal.

The night temperature in world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, improved about 2 degree from Saturday and settled at 0.7 degree. However, chilly weather conditions continued in the health resort during the day due to ice cold winds and overcast conditions. The night temperature in Pahalgam was about 2 degree above normal.

The mercury at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir, tourist resort of Kokernag improved and settled at 2.8 degree, 2.6 degree and 3.8 degree, respectively.
