Book Review: 'Sniper’s Eye' by Mainak Dhar

Suspense thrillers are liked by readers for the sheer element of intrigue, plot twists, fascinating climaxes and the adrenaline rush that all this entails. This element of suspense and intrigue grows manifold when international mafias and geopolitical tensions are brought into the picture. The author Mainak Dhar comes up with the book “Sniper’s Eye”, which is a suspense thriller with a plot centred on India-Pakistan political tensions.
The book follows the protagonist Aaditya Ghosh who works as a senior manager at a US firm in Mumbai. Aaditya is on a movie date with his girlfriend Zoya, in a Mumbai mall, when the man in front of him is shot by a sniper. Aaditya is sucked deeper into the chaos unleashed by that shot as the body count mounts. As things unfold, he has to tap into his bloody past that has put him in the terror kill list. What will Aaditya do? Will he join hands with the sniper terrorising Mumbai? The storyline then goes on to answer these questions.
The front cover of the book is captivating and is very apt to the book’s storyline and the genre of suspense thrillers. The blurb at the back cover is well written and will pique the interest of crime thriller aficionados who will surely pick up the book on reading it. The plot is gripping, with racy twists and turns; and the subplots are also incorporated well in the seamlessly written storyline.
The character formation in the book is multilayered, which is more so in the case of Aaditya. The element of intrigue associated with the snipers, and the whole premise of suspense also makes reading this taut thriller an entertaining experience. The book also has some action sequences, which will be liked by readers interested in such genres.
This is a smart and adroitly written thriller saga with skilfully interwoven storylines. It should be read by readers interested in reading crime thrillers centred on the Indo-Pak geopolitical tensions- with elements of terrorist organisations, espionage, gritty agents of intelligence agencies, and tales of courage and sacrifice; and by those who want to foray into an Indian crime thriller. This is a book which packs a powerful punch, with its fast-paced, edgy and nuanced storyline.
