SRINAGAR: Three Jaish-e-Mohammed militants were killed in a fierce encounter with security forces on Sunday morning in Kulgam district.

However, in what is a first incident of its kind, a SSB jawan was killed inside a CRPF camp on Sunday night by militants who used sniper rifles, possibly armed with night-vision devices, in Pulwama district.

A gunfight took place at Laroo village in Kulgam district, one of the worst hit by militancy in South Kashmir, Sunday morning when security forces launched a search-and-cordon operation following intelligence report about the presence of militants.

After zeroing in on the hiding terrorists, the security forces made repeated announcements to the militants for surrender but instead they were fired upon, resulting into injuries to two Army soldiers.

The security forces retaliated to the fire and the exchange lasted several hours in which three militants were gunned down.

The killed terrorists were identified as Shahid Ahmad Tantary son of Abdul Rashid Tantary of Wangam Shopian, who joined militancy in July 2018; Zubair Ahmad Lone son of Manzoor Ahmad Lone of Ahwatoo Kulgam, (joined in May); and Yazil Ahmad Makroo son of Mushtaq Ahmad of Arwani Bijbehara, who had joined in June this year.

A huge cache of arms and ammunition were recovered from the spot.

In another incident, the first of its kind in Kashmir, a SSB jawan was killed inside a CRPF camp on Sunday night by militants who used sniper rifles, possibly armed with night-vision devices, in Pulwama district, officials said.

The incident happened in Midoora of Tral area when constable Vijay Kumar was talking to his family inside the 180 BN CRPF camp. He was shot by militants from nearby hills, they said.

Kumar received splinter injury and was subsequently shifted to army’s 92 base hospital for medical attention. However, he succumbed to injuries at the hospital.

This is possibly the first time that militants have used sniper fires on security forces.

More gunshots were heard but were effective retaliated by security forces.

The Sashastra Seema Bal was deployed in the area in view of the local bodies’ elections.

Meanwhile, the whole area has been cordoned off by the security forces to nab the attackers
