Srinagar, Oct 20: Bharatiya Janata Party opened its account in Srinagar Municipal Corporation.
Its nominee won from an uptown ward after securing just eight votes.
''I thank people who did not vote and also those who voted for me,'' Bashir Ahmad Mir of BJP said after he was declared winner from 74 ward of SMC Bagh-e-Mehtab.
His unknown opponent got just one vote which he himself had cast.
Only nine votes were polled in the ward, counting of which was held on Saturday under an impregnable security blanket at Sher-e-Kashmir International Conference Centre on the banks of the Dal lake.
Mr Mir said now he will ensure that the problems of the people of his ward are addressed.
National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party, besides Communist Party of India (Marxist), boycotted the four-phase Urban Local Bodies polls in the state, affirming that state and Central governments failed to clear their stand on Article 35 A issue.
