Mobile internet service restored in Srinagar

Srinagar, Oct 18: Mobile internet service of all cellular companies, including the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), was restored on Thursday after remaining suspended on Wednesday due to security reasons in Srinagar, where three militants, including a top Lashkar-Toiba commander, were killed in an encounter.

“2G services were restored, following no untoward incident in any part of the summer capital, Srinagar on Thursday,” official sources told TNN.

However, they said high speed internet, including 3G and 4G, will be restored after reviewing the situation in Srinagar.

Meanwhile, the speed of BSNL broadband and point-to-point internet services were also very slow in Srinagar.

The services were suspended as precautionary measure following killing of top Lashkar-Toiba commander Mehrajudin Bangroo and two other militants in an encounter with security forces at Fateh Kadal in downtown Srinagar in the wee hours on Wednesday.

A policeman was martyred while four other security force personnel were injured in the encounter.

Clashes erupted in many parts of the city on Wednesday after the news of the death of the militants spread in the summer capital.

This was not the first time that mobile internet was suspended as a precautionary measure in Srinagar.

In the past also, authorities have suspended internet, particularly mobile internet, claiming that the social media is being used to instigate protests and create law and order problems.
