Train service remains suspended in south, resumes in north Kashmir

Srinagar, Oct 13: Train service remained suspended for the second day on Saturday for security reasons in south Kashmir, where a militant was killed in an encounter in Pulwama district this morning.

However, train service resumed in north Kashmir after remaining suspended on Friday, when separatists had called for a general strike against the killing of two Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militants in an encounter with security forces in Kupwara on Thursday.

Train service remained suspended in the south Kashmir on Saturday, a senior railway official told TNN.

Therefore, he said, no train will chug of Badgam-Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region. This is for the fourth time, train service has been suspended in south Kashmir this week.

'We have resumed train service in north Kashmir and trains will run on Srinagar-Badgam and Baramulla as per schedule,' he said.

He said railway authorities are acting on the advice of state administration.

'We cannot take decision to resume or suspend train service since safety and security of passengers besides railway officials and property was necessary as in the past railway suffered huge losses during strikes and protests,' he added.
