Jawan killed in landmine blast, 2 civilians injured in Pak firing

SRINAGAR: In a major success, the Army foiled an infiltration attempt killing three intruders along the Line of Control (LoC) in Tangdhar sector, where Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked firing early in the morning as well.
Two civilians were also injured when Pakistani troops resorted opened another front and resorted to indiscriminate shelling and firing on Indian positions in Karnah sector in the same district last evening, while an army man was killed in a landmine explosion near LoC this evening.
In a separate incident, terrorists attempted to snatch weapon of a police sentry, guarding a National Conference (NC) leader house, in south Kashmir district of Shopian, foiled by the alert guard.
Alert troops on Saturday foiled a major infiltration bid from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) when they gunned down three heavily armed terrorists in Tangdhar sector.
Official sources said that troops guarding the Line of Control (LoC) noticed a group of terrorists sneaking into this side in Tangdhar sector in the frontier district of Kupwara. When challenged and asked to surrender, terrorists opened fire, they said adding troops also retaliated and in the ensuing encounter three terrorists, believed to be foreigners, were killed.
Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police (DGP) S P Vaid also confirmed the killing of terrorists.
"Three terrorists killed by Army while infiltrating in Tangdhar sector of Kupwara today," Vaid tweeted.
Another police official added a search operation was on in the area.
Pakistani troops had violated ceasefire and resorted to unprovoked firing from across the fence since last night till early this morning.
The troops from across the LoC targeted forward Indian posts in Tangdhar sector at 1930 hrs on Friday evening. However, Indian troops also retaliated and the intermittent exchange of fire continued till 0430 hrs of Saturday.
Sources had already feared that Pakistani troops were resorting to firing to help infiltration into Jammu and Kashmir before the higher reaches are closed due to snowfall in winter.
Three of them were killed in the evening.
Earlier, two persons were injured when Pakistani troops resorted opened another front and resorted to indiscriminate shelling and firing on Indian positions in Karnah sector in the frontier district of Kupwara on Friday night, official sources said here today.
They said Pak troops resorted to unprovoked indiscriminate firing across the Line of Control (LoC) in Karnah last night. Indian troops also returned the fire and the exchange of fire continued for some time.
Two civilians identified as Zameer Ahmad and Jehangir Ahmad were injured in the firing who were shifted to hospital.
Damage suffered by Pak troops was not immediately known, they said.
Meanwhile, an army man was killed in a landmine explosion near the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Saturday evening.
A police officer said that the army’s 57 RR was on a routine patrol duty at Gulab Post near Lasdat area adjacent to Jat Gali area along the LoC when the landmine blast took place.
“In the incident, the army man sustained multiple splinter injuries and was taken to military hospital Drugmulla where he succumbed later,” he said.
An army officer based in Kupwara also confirmed the death due to the explosion. The officer identified the deceased as Rifleman Dalbir Singh (27).
Reports also came of violation of the ceasefire in Uri sector with unprovoked shelling this evening, although there was no loss of life, police said.
"Some mortar shells were fired by Pakistani forces on the Thajal-Chranda area of Uri (in north Kashmir's Baramulla district)," Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Baramulla, Imtiyaz Hussain said.
One of the shells hit a washroom adjacent to a house in Thajal and damaged it, he said.
No loss of life has been reported, the SSP added.
In a separate incident, terrorists attacked the residence of a National Conference (NC) leader in Shopian district on Saturday, police said, in a bid to snatch the rifle of security guard which was foiled.
“An alert police sentry, guarding a National Conference (NC) leader house, in south Kashmir district of Shopian, foiled a terrorist attempt to snatch his weapon early Saturday,” official sources said.
They said terrorists fired upon a police guard, posted for the protection of NC leader Showkat Ahmad Ganie at village Chitragam in Shopian early this morning.
Alert guard returned the fire but the terrorists managed to escape under the cover of darkness, they said adding a massive hunt has been launched against the terrorists in the area.
There was no damage in the firing, they said adding it was probably an attempt to loot weapons from the police guard.
