Srinagar, Aug 16: Life returned to normal on Thursday in the Kashmir valley, where separatists had called for a general strike on Independence Day (ID).

Shops and business establishments reopened this morning and traffic was plying on all routes normally. Government offices, banks and educational institutions, which were closed yesterday on account of holiday, are functioning normally today.

Additional security forces and state police personnel deployed to maintain law and order were withdrawn. However, personnel deployed on Road Opening Party (ROP) were seen keeping a close watch on vehicles and pedestrians in Srinagar and other major towns and tehsil headquarters.

Security forces remained deployed in the civil lines, particularly on Moulana Azad road, the route used by VIPs, including Governor, his advisors and top bureaucrats to reach civil secretariat, seat of the government.

Reports of normalcy were also received from all district and tehsil headquarters in north, south and central Kashmir.
