Srinagar, Aug 15: Train service was suspended on Wednesday for security reasons in the Kashmir valley, following a strike called by separatists on the Independence Day being celebrated today throughout the country.

"We have suspended all train runs in the Kashmir valley following a fresh advisory received from administration on Tuesday night", a senior railway official told TNN.

He said the railway authorities are acting on the advice of the local administration, particularly police, since the safety and security of the passengers besides railway staff are important. Railways suffered loss of crores of rupees in the past during demonstrations and strikes, he added.

"Therefore, no train will run on Srinagar-Badgam and Baramulla in north Kashmir track", he said adding similarly no train will chug on Badgam-Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region.
