Khalsa College Students begin “Swachh Bharat Internship”

Jammu: Students of M.C Khalsa College of Education, Chand Nagar, and Jammu while exemplifying true spirit of social work for nation’s development initiated Swachh Bharat Internship Programme on 21st June, 2018 as directed by Ministry of Human Resource Development and Drinking water and Sanitation to follow Swachh Bharat Internship Programme (SBSI) for 3 months.

Inaugural session was followed by detailed presentation by Dr.(Mrs.)Madhu Singh, Principal of the College to emphasize the objectives to be observed during 100 hrs. of Swachhta and make Swachh Bharat Mission a Jan Andolan.

10 Villages namely:- Suhanjana, Bhour West, Makhwal, Bhour East, Dundpur, Parladpur, Chatha Pind, Phallain Mandal, Gadigarh, Hakkal with a group of 10 students with one as the Team Leader for each village along with a Supervisor were adopted for completing the list of activities categorized under Information-Education-Commission activities (IEC) and Solid Waste Management (SWM) activities. IEC dealt with the activities related to Sanitation, Hygiene Practices, and Defecation. SWM dealt with the activities related to Target awareness around waste collection, Segregation, Disposal and waste free environment.

All the groups collected the data by following door to door visit of occupants in different villages and then analysed that thoroughly. Based on the analysis, the activities were organized for the villagers under supervision of Sarpanch and other Gram Panchayat members. For Eg:- Awareness Campaign, Door-to-door Campaign, Nukkad Natak/Street Plays/Swachhata related folk-song and dance performances, Segregation of solid waste, Development of Compost Pits, Street Cleaning, Drain cleaning , Construction of Toilets etc.

The Programme was concluded on 31st July, 2018 where all the groups tried to spend 100 hrs with the villagers to motivate and inspire them for the various activities and actions guided and demonstrated to them in order to promoting nature friendly habits and healthy style needs to adopt in their routine life. The reports were submitted online as per the guidelines provided by Central Govt.

General analysis of door to door in almost all the villages generated some eye catching facts that 75-80% of residents are deprived of favourable living conditions, living in very-very small houses, having no toilet facility and sanitation, sewage conditions are very poor. No place to dispose of the garbage and not supplied with purifying drinking water. 90% of population is not aware about segregation of waste material and methods of dispose them off.
