Jawan sniped at LoC; terrorists abduct, murder youth in Valley

SRINAGAR: An army soldier was killed in sniper attack from across the Line of Control (LoC) as Pakistan made an unsuccessful infiltration bid in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, even as terrorists abducted yet another man and murdered him in Pulwama district of south Kashmir on Monday morning.
An Army official said Sepoy Pushpendra Singh laid down his life while foiling an infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) in Tangdhar.

He said that Pakistan Rangers in “violation of ceasefire” opened the sniper fire upon the army posts of 20 Jat at Jal LP post along the LoC in Tanghdar today wee hours, in an apparent attempt to facilitate infiltration.

“In the incident, Sepoy Pushpendra Singh of Mathura, Uttar Pradesh was injured and airlifted to army’s 92-base hospital at Badamibagh here, an official said.
“The injured later at around 3: 30 pm succumbed to injuries, an army officer confirmed.

In South Kashmir, terrorists shot dead a civilian after abducting him from his house in Pulwama district, police said today.

"Terrorists in Murran area of Pulwama last night barged inside the house of 24-year-old Gulzar Ahmad Bhat and abducted him," a police official said.

The official said police recovered Bhat's bullet-riddled body from a nearby field. Bhat, was running an eye clinic at Bijbehara.

Reports said that the body of the youth was found by the locals and accordingly informed the police.

The police recovered the body soon after information that the youth was lying in a pool of blood near the peripheries of an orchard at Bunpora Muran.

"Police have registered a case and initiated investigation, which suggest involvement of local militants Zahoor Thokar and Showkat Dar of the Hizbul Mujahideen outfit," an official added.

Meanwhile, two overground workers (OGWs) of terrorists have been arrested for a failed rifle snatching bid from a bank guard in Pulwama district, police said today.

On 10 August, two persons barged inside the Jammu and Kashmir Bank branch at Khrew in the south Kashmir district and attacked bank guard Mumtaz Ahmad with pepper spray and a sharp-edged weapon in an attempt to snatch his 12-bore rifle, a police spokesman said.

He said Ahmad successfully foiled the bid to snatch his rifle but suffered injuries, following which he was rushed to Khrew hospital. The accused persons fled the spot, the spokesman said.

A case under relevant sections was registered and the investigation was initiated, he said.

During the course of investigation, the involvement of two OGWs, Yasir Ahmad Wani a resident of Babapora and Yawar Sultan a resident of Shar Shali Khrew, surfaced in the commission of crime, the spokesman said.

He said both were subsequently arrested and the case is being probed.
