JAMMU: There is no respite in sight for the weakened in numbers state police as two IPS officers of Inspector General (IG) ranks are superannuating next month, adding to five others who retired early this year.
Another critical gap staring police in eye is the dearth of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGs) in the elite force, with only 9 of the required 31 in chair, among whom five are on various deputations out of state, stressing further the other four officers.
Two IPS officers of IGP rank-- Jagjeet Kumar and Ashkoor Ahmed Wani—are getting superannuated on September 30, this year. They are among the seven officers of the Indian Police Service (IPS) of Jammu and Kashmir cadre to depart from force this year.
The five other IPS officers who attained superannuation included Sham Lal Sharma, retired on 31 January, Ghulam Hassan Bhat, Vijay Kumar, Alok Puri—all of them retired on 28 February, and Mubark Ahmed Ganaie, who got superannuated on 30 April.
The superannuation of the IPS officers are taking place at a time when already there is a dearth of IPS officers with almost no Deputy Inspectors General of Police (DIG) in the elite police force.
Out of required strength of 31 –including 25 sanctioned posts of DIGs in JKP, the department has almost no DIG on all wings of the police force including coveted investigative wings viz Vigilance and Crime Branch.
Presently, the state police have nine DIGs with five on deputation which include Uttam Chand and Sujit Kumar, on Central deputations with Government of India (GOI), Keshav Ram, on deputation with CBI, Atul Kumar Goel, on deputation with NIA, and Sunil Gupta on inter-state deputation to UP Cadre.
Consequently, the remaining four DIGs are stressed further in the terms of additional charges. Vidhi Kumar Birdi, DIG CKR range is given additional charge of NKR range, whereas Bhim Sen Tuti, DIG JKS range is given additional charge of UR range.
The other two are Rafeequl Hassan, DIG DKR range and Deepak Kumar Salathia DIG Rajouri-Poonch range.
