70-year-old Hurriyat Activist Detained Under PSA Dies

Srinagar: A 70 year old pro-freedom activist, who was lodged in Kotbalwal jail, Jammu under Public Safety Act (PSA) passed away on Tuesday, sources said.

A popular pro freedom activist of Uri, Gulam Hassan Malik, alias Noor Khan of Pehlipora village Uri was arrested in January this year and was lodged under PSA in Kotbalwal jail Jammu, they said.

Malik was ill and was taken to Government Medical College Hospital, Jammu, for a medical check-up by jail authorities, where he breathed his last, sources said.

“We received a call from jail authorities that my imprisoned father has passed away,” Malik’s son Irshad Ahmad Malik told Kashmir Reader over phone. He added that his father was unwell and was shifted to Jammu hospital by jail authorities a couple of days before.

“I am on way to Jammu to receive the body of my father,” Irshad said.

Malik, according to sources was affiliated with militancy in 1990. He was jailed more than thrice since then. Malik was known in Uri area for his pro-freedom activism.
