JAMMU: Three weeks after he was urged by former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to ensure proper supervision of various matters the state was fighting in Supreme Court and state High Court, the governor N N Vohra on Saturday asked the newly appointed Advocate General to report to him of the status of the pending litigations.

Advocate General D C Raina, who had taken over as the top lawyer of the state earlier this week had called on Governor Vohra at the Raj Bhavan today.

“Governor has asked Raina to early discuss with him the status of all important cases pending in High Courts/Supreme Court which relate to J&K,” a Raj Bhavan Official informed.

It may be mentioned here that litigations regarding the state’s special status as provided by Article 370 & Article 35A of constitution and the Rasana minor rape-and-murder case are among the major cases which are currently pending in various courts across the country, including the apex court.

On June 22, in her first meeting with Governor after demitting the office following BJP withdrawing support from the ruling coalition, Mehbooba Mufti had impressed upon Vohra to ensure professional pursuance of these cases which couldn’t be finalised during her tenure.

Conveying her concern over protection of Article 35-A, Mehbooba had said the situation needs to be dealt with caution.

“Impressed upon Governor the need to safeguard Article 370 & Article 35A, for which we had been fighting a case in the Honorable Supreme Court,” Mehbooba wrote on Twitter.

It was learnt that Mehbooba told Governor that the cases related to both these articles are sub-judice at present and that her government had engaged the top lawyers of the country to defend the state’s special status in country’s top court.

She had expressed hope that the fight to safeguard Jammu and Kashmir’s special status will carry forward with the same zest.

She had also sought punishment to culprits of Rasana rape-and-murder of eight-year-old girl during her meeting.

The Supreme Court is supervising the case and had ordered its trial to be held at Pathankot District and Session Court.
