Srinagar, July 13: Moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) chairman Mirwaiz Moulvi Umar Farooq was on Friday detained after he defied house arrest restriction and tried to take out a march to Naqshband Sahib shrine to pay tribute to the Martyrs of 1931.

Meanwhile, Hardline Hurriyat Conference (HC) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani remained under house arrest while JKLF chief Mohammad Yasin Malik remained lodged in a local police station.

A spokesperson for the moderate Hurriyat told UNI that Mirwaiz defied house arrest restriction and left his Nigeen house to lead a procession to Martyrs Graveyard at Naqshband Sahib Shrine to pay homage to Martyrs of 1931.

But, immediately after Mirwaiz stepped out of his house, he was taken into custody and lodged in police station Nigeen.

The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), headed by Geelani, Mirwaiz and Malik, had given ‘Naqshband Sahib Chalo’ call to commemorate the martyrs of 1931 on their death anniversary.

Meanwhile, Mr Geelani remained under house arrest at his Hyderpora residence.

A spokesperson of JKLF said that Malik remained lodged in a local police station since July 5. Malik was taken into preventive custody and shifted to a police station on July 5 ahead of the second death anniversary of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) commander Burhan Wani, who was killed in an encounter with security forces on July 8, 2016.
