Srinagar, July 12: Jammu and Kashmir police has denied reports that handcarts of fruit vendors were set on fire by security forces during clashes on Wednesday in downtown Srinagar.

“Some media houses, including Rising Kashmir, and a few other news portals have carried a news story where they have blamed security forces for setting vendors carts ablaze in Soura,” a police spokesperson said.

He said the concerned police officials have rebutted such reports.

He added that the Srinagar police have already issued detailed statement regarding the sequence of events of the incident where miscreants set ablaze handcarts of fruit vendors and also damaged fencing around trees and road dividers.

“Srinagar police has appealed general public not to pay heed to the rumours. Legal action will be taken against rumour mongers,” he added.
