Modi, Amitabh among others hail Dipa's Gold win in FIG Gymnastics

New Delhi, July 9: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and mega star Amitabh Bachchan among others congratulated premier gymnast Dipa Karmakar who clinched a Gold medal in the vault event of FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup at Mersin in Turkey.

"India is proud of @DipaKarmakar! Congratulations to her on winning a well-deserved Gold in the vault event at the FIG World Challenge Cup in Mersin, Turkey. This win is a prime example of her tenacity and never-say-die attitude," Prime Minister said in a tweet.

In her missive, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee wrote, "Congratulations to @DipaKarmakar for winning the gold medal at the World Cup Gymnastics in Turkey. We are all so proud of you. Winning on the world stage inspires young girls and boys in India to reach greater heights.".

Among others - and people from wide range of background - Amitabh Bachchan took to the micro blogging site and said, "Congratulations to @DipaKarmakar .. she has won Gold in the World Championships for gymnastics on the Vault .. you proved to the World that what was wrongly denied to you in the Olympics, you won it here .. !! Proud of you .. we are proud Indians because of you".

Extending his congratulations, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb described Ms Karmakar as "Tripura's daughter" and an "inspiration for millions across the world".

He also said that all support and help will be provided by state government to Dipa Karmakar so that she can continue making the nation proud and win a Gold Medal for India in 2020 Olympics.

The 24-year-old Dipa returned to action after about two years of lay-off due to injury. She scored 14.150 to win gold on Sunday making it her first medal in a World Challenge Cup.

Several senior politicians and celebrities have hailed Dipa Karmakar's achievement.

In her response to Prime Minister, Ms Karmakar tweeted saying: "Thank you for your encouraging words sir. I will work hard to bring more laurels to the country".
