Book: The Colours of Passion Author: Sourabh Mukherjee

Crime thrillers and murder mysteries, or any detective mystery for that matter, is a much liked and widely read genre, for the readers feel more involved in the book as there are subtle clues in the storyline for helping both the detective and the reader to catch the culprit. The author Sourabh Mukherjee comes up with such a book “The Colours of Passion” which is a gripping detective mystery-thriller with a subtle delving into complexities of love and hate, and also into the psychological reasons and motives for the things that people do.
The storyline follows the murder of Hiya Sen, the reigning queen of Tollywood, who is brutally raped and murdered within days of her fairy-tale wedding with leading industrialist Manav Chauhan. As ACP Agni Mitra investigates into the high-profile murder, he meets Neha Awasthi, Manav’s ex-fiancée; her father Deepak Awasthi, who was eyeing business through the alliance; Mayank Kapoor, an alcoholic male model who was Hiya’s ex-fling; and Rituja Sen, a former Tollywood diva. With many suspects, all of whom had reasons of murdering Hiya, he starts looking for answers to many questions. Who killed Hiya Sen? What was the motive for the murder? When two more connected murders make headlines, it’s time for ACP Agni Mitra to find answers to more perplexing questions and unveil shocking truths.
This book is a page-turner that will have readers guessing from the first; and has a gripping whodunit, with the storyline throwing twists and turns at every page. Although, identifying the culprit isn’t that much a challenge in the ending pages, but the motive of murder which is revealed in the climax will take the reader by surprise and make the denouement the best part of this engrossing narrative. The characters are excitingly complex, and each one of them is portrayed in shades of grey, not starkly black and white. The murder mystery is all involving; and the taut narrative, crisp sentences and the simple flow of the story makes it a great read. However, some sentences in the narrative seem repetitive, and though some of them are for effect, some of the repetition could have been done away with.
This is a detective thriller with a charismatic detective-policeman hero- ACP Agni Mitra is a character that will definitely be loved by readers for his inherent enigma and astute investigation skills; and the narrative does cohere in its attempt of unravelling the dark secrets behind the limelight. With elements of thrill, mystery, human psychology and romance, this is a perfect book for readers to read sitting relaxingly on their lounges and revelling into, but the riveting suspense will definitely keep them on their toes. This book is a remarkable mystery read, with a gripping whodunit and sharp and concise narrative.
