17 killed in UP road accident; CM announces Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia

Mainpuri, Jun 13: At least 17 people were killed and 16 others injured, when a tourist bus overturned after hitting a divider in this district of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday morning.

According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Ajay Shanker Rai, the accident occurred near Kiratpur police chowki on the Etawah -Mainpuri highway.

The driver of the bus, en route to Farrukhabad from Jaipur, lost control of the vehicle near a steep curve due to over speeding.

While 16 people died on the spot, one succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

The private bus of 'Maan' company was reportedly carrying 33 passengers when the tragedy occurred around 0500 hrs.

The injured have been rushed to the PGI, Saifai, where the condition of two was stated to be critical.

Majority of the deceased were natives of Kannauj, Agra and Farrukhabad.

The driver, however, survived and is currently being treated at the hospital. His statement will be recorded later.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed grief over the deaths and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakhs each to the families of the deceased.

He also announced Rs 50,000 financial aid to the injured too besides instructing officials to provide complete medical assistance to the injured.
