Jammu, May 20: Eighteen passengers stranded on a stretch between Anantnag and Kishtwar districts of Jammu and Kashmir due to unseasonal snowfall were rescued by the police in a swift operation, an official said today.

The police launched the operation after receiving information that six vehicles coming from Anantnag got stranded due to the inclement weather yesterday, the official said.

He said Sinthan top received heavy rain and intermittent snowfall last night and early morning yesterday.

Due to the fresh snowfall and incessant rains, six vehicles carrying 18 people, including women and children, got stuck on the second road curve on the Kishtwar side of the road, he said.

The official said the police got the track cleared and rescued all the 18 people.

Meanwhile, the official said the police were taking action against different mobile companies for badly damaging the road during the process of cable laying.

These companies have violated all the rules and have virtually ploughed the road, turning it into a heap of debris. The police are going to take stern action against these companies for damaging public property, the official said.

He said the road was closed for vehicular traffic as a precautionary measure and no vehicle was allowed to ply on either side of it since yesterday.
