JAMMU: In a creepy and uncanny incident which certainly will bring disgrace to ‘Khakhi’ meant to maintain law and order, the Gharota Police allegedly labeled a Gujjar as a bovine smuggler and later booked him in lieu of money but as the ill luck they had, the tables turned upon them.

The Gujjar, however, displaying smartness and acting upon tit-for-tat policy, successfully managed to get the two cops trapped at the hands of State Vigilance Organization (SVO) who managed to nab one, even as the other managed to give slip to the sleuths of vigilance during a raid, which contrary to routine, was carried out at a Police Station.

Official sources have identified the accused duo as SPO Amit Sharma of Nagrota and Head Constable Sohan Lal of Purknoo.

Meanwhile, the act of corruption in police station has, however, sent the senior cops into tizzy who now preferred to remain tight lipped.

As per official sources, Gharota Police detained one Farooq Ahmed of village Batada with his buffalo and a calf when latter was taking them to his home in Tata Mahindra vehicle branding him as a bovine smuggler.
A case of mistaken identity could be digested by any sane person, but the duo going beyond the limits, demanded money from the detainee failing which they booked him u/s 188 RPC.

“The Gujjar youth however secured bail from court,” sources said, adding, “the local court also directed Police to release the vehicle and bovine animals in his favour.”

To the surprise of victim – the Gujjar when he came back to claim his vehicle and cattle, the duo asked him to pay Rs 12,000 as bribe to release his property.

Not willing to budge so easily, the aggrieved narrated the incident before the SVO, Jammu which accordingly registered a case and laid a trap.

“The SVO asked Gujjar to pay Rs 10,000 to cops in Police Station as bribe and accordingly trapped two cops red handedly,” sources said.

Official sources said that while Amit Sharma, Personal Security Officer (PSO) of SHO Gharota Gurmeet Singh was nabbed on spot the other cop who Investigation Officer of the case namely Head Constable Sohal Lal of Purkhoo managed to give slip to raiding team.

“However a manhunt was on to nab him by the SVO sleuths till the last reports poured in, sources added.
“Officially, I am not informed, however, departmental action would be taken against the erring cops once communication from SVO poured in my office”, said SSP Jammu Vivek Gupta when contacted by the News Now.
