Youth attempts to rape minor girl, mob attacks police station

Guntur, May 16: A tense situation prevailed in Old Guntur after a group of people attacked the Old Guntur Police Station on Tuesday night demanding action against a man whom they alleged had attempted to rape a seven-year-old girl.

A mob pelted stones and set on fire an electric transformer and vehicles here.

Police said that a 20-year-old youth, B Raghuram barged into a house, located in the old Guntur area and attempted to rape the girl when she was alone at home. However, she resisted his attempt and came out screaming for help following which neighbours rushed to her rescue.

In the meantime, the accused fled the scene, went to police station and surrendered before police.

The victim's neighbours rushed to the police station and demanded that the accused be handed over to them. When the police refused, the furious mob pelted stones on the newly constructed Aadarsh police station in which several police personal including a sub-inspector sustained injuries.

The police resorted to lathi charge to disperse the violent mob. Several persons sustained bleeding injuries in the cane charge.

The mob set on fire to an electric transformer, located adjacent to a petrol bunk and the flames spread all over and destroyed more than a dozen two-wheelers and police vehicle.

Inspector General Gopal Rao and Urban SP Vijay Rao personally monitored the situation.

The police clamped Section 144 CrPC in the area and blocked all the roads leading to the area. The situation is under control now, the SP said. Over 300 police personnel were deployed in the area to maintain law and order situation, he said.

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chnadrababu Naidu expressed anger over the incident. He held a meeting with Chief Secretary Dinesh Kumar, DGP Malakondaiah and Intelligence officials here on Wednesday. He directed them to take stringent action against those who commit atrocities on women. He directed officials to extend help to the victim and their family.

It may be mentioned here that similar situation prevailed at Dachepalli village in the district few days ago when a 55-year-old man raped a nine-year-old girl. The rape accused, fearing police action, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself to a tree.
