Varanasi flyover collapse: 4 suspended

Varanasi, May 16: The Uttar Pradesh government has suspended four senior engineers of the State Bridge Corporation in connection with the flyover collapse in Varanasi cantt Railway station here on Tuesday evening.
At least 18 people were killed and 25 others injured in the incident. Three of the injured are in critical condition.
The four engineers, suspended following preliminary probe, are chief project manager H C Tiwari, Project Manager K R Sudan , assistant engineer Rajendra Singh and junior engineer Lalchand.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath rushed here at midnight on Tuesday to monitor the rescue operation after Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to him. Varanasi is represented by the PM in the Lok Sabha.
Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, who is on the spot, told UNI on Wednesday that a three-member high-level probe team has been set up to investigate into the technical lapses which led to the incident.
This probe team would be separate from the investigation team set up by CM under the chairmanship of Agriculture Production Commissioner (APC) Raj Pratap Singh which will submit its report by tomorrow.
Mr Maurya said the probe team would be headed by PWD chairman Y K Gupta, along with Joint MD of Bridge Corporation Y K Sharma and Chief engineer, Allahabad, S K Gupta. The team will submit its report within 15 days.
Meanwhile , the rescue work has been completed and all the smashed vehicles have been removed.
Mr Maurya said Rs five lakh compensation to the families of the deceased would be handed over on Wednesday while critically injured would be given Rs two lakh each.
However, confusion prevailed over the number of casualties in the incident. Mr Adityanath said that 15 people died in the incident while Mr Maurya put the death toll 18.
